Planting Tips for Best success

1. Soil Test:  If your soil has not been tested for nutrients, consult your local garden store or county agent. The right formula is important.

2. Loosen the Soil:  Start loosening the soil with a power rototiller, garden tractor, or spade, to a depth of 6 to 8 inches.

3. Level and Set Desired Slope:  After loosening the soil, rake to remove clods and level to desired slope.

4. Fertilize and Pre-Water:  For even distribution use a spreader to apply fertilizer and seed.  Water deeply to settle soil particles and insure adequate moisture reserve.

5. Sow Seed:  After sowing seed, rake lightly and firm with roller. An organic mulch cover (peat moss or sawdust) or an inorganic mulch (vermiculite) is often added. Do not mulch over 1/8 inch deep. Keep topsoil moist until seeds germinate. Mulch prevents washing on steep slopes.

6.  Water:  Water immediately after seeding, and continue three to four waterings a day until grass is established. Stop sprinkling when puddles start to form. Generally 15 to 20 minutes is enough.

7. Weeds:  Weeds are not uncommon in a new seeding. Most of them will disappear with mowing or with the first frost. Remaining weeds can easily be controlled with herbicides, which should be applied only after the lawn has been mowed three times. Be careful with herbicides and fertilizer combination products as well. Always read and follow the directions on the label.
