Jirdon Industries was
founded in 1915 by John R. Jirdon when he and a partner opened a feed
store and lumber yard in
Morrill,
Nebraska.
Jirdon Industries first started selling fertilizers in the 1930's as the
first company in the North Platte River Valley to market low pressure
and non-pressure nitrogen solutions for direct application, the first to
build a bulk blending plant which began operating in 1965, and the first
to actively promote use of micronutrients. Jirdon Industries also
operated bulk blending plants at
Gering, Nebraska
and Torrington, Wyoming. Liquid mixing plants were located at Morrill,
Gering, Torrington,
and Cody, Wyoming. In addition, there was a bulk station and retail
outlet at Mitchell, Nebraska. Jirdon Industries' marketing area included
Western Nebraska, Wyoming, and parts of Montana, South Dakota, and
Colorado. In 1971 Mr. Jirdon, along with employees Bill and Casey Siegel, formed a separate company from Jirdon Industries and called it Jirdon Agri Chemicals. Jirdon Agri Chemicals focused on handling fertilizers, ag chemicals, and seeds separating out Jirdon's other livestock and feed manufacturing divisions. Jirdon also operated a host of peripheral businesses; lawn and garden fertilizers, pelleted feeds, grain fumigation, sprayer parts and supplies. In 1979, the Siegel's bought total interest in the company from Mr. Jirdon. The company's strategy was to promote its top quality products and services at an affordable price. Jirdon focused marketing products specifically for the areas they served. In fact, Jirdon’s top fertilizer was formulated specifically for the Rocky Mountain Region soils which are high in alkaline and deficient in iron. Jirdon's lawn and garden fertilizer was one of the few formulated to offset these deficiencies in the soil. In 2005 WESTCO purchased Jirdon Agri Chemcials, Inc. This acquisition offered the opportunity for growth in our existing fertilizer, chemical, and seed branches along with the opportunity to add new product lines with the addition of branches in lawn and garden, turf, and feed. Today, Jirdon offers an array of affordable lawn, garden, turf, and seed products through its retail dealer network which serves a five state region including: Colorado, Montana, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Wyoming. Jirdon's top quality fertilizers are formulated specifically for the Rocky Mountain Region.
